I'm not sure if any of you have heard about this or if anyone lives in Florence, but we just got our first indoor range in town!

I couldn't make it there Saturday, but I drove by on Sunday (invitation only) and it's a very nice looking place, easy to find right off Cashua, close to 52. The building is brand new!

FLORENCE, S.C. --

The owner of a Florence gun and apparel shop is aiming at June for construction to be completed of a more than $1 million facility that will feature a state-of-the-art indoor shooting range.

Being built just about a mile from the current, retail-only location of Archie Woodberry?s Blue Line Public Safety Supply shop, the new Blue Line Shooting Center will boast a 2,400-square-foot retail area showroom, an 800-square-foot training classroom, and an indoor shooting range. There will be 10 25-yard, air-conditioned shooting stalls in the range able to support fire from handguns and up to .308-caliber rifles. Woodberry said the nearest comparable facilities are located in Myrtle Beach, Columbia and Fayetteville and the calibers that the shooting range can support may change in the future.

?The [bullet trap] that we chose is rifle capable,? Woodberry said. ?The range is capable of going larger. We are willing to change as need arises.?

The shooting range will also feature electronic target retrieval and video surveillance.

The project is two years in the making and Woodberry hopes that the new facilities will help redirect his business away from apparel and uniform sales and more into the retail of guns.

?Right now we are a uniform shop that sells guns,? Woodberry said. ?I want to be a gun shop that sells uniforms.?

Woodberry?s interest in gun sales and training spawns from his near 20-year-long law enforcement career in Marion and Florence Counties where he worked SWAT, drug interdiction and as an investigator. In fact, Woodberry said that about 90 percent of his business comes from local law enforcement communities in Florence and as far away as Chesterfield County.

He hopes that with on-site training and the new indoor range, the ?try before you buy? methodology will expand the shop?s ability to further tailor to his clients? needs.

For customers interested in using the range who do not own a gun, Woodberry said the range will have dedicated guns for customers to rent. As far as ammo is concerned, he said that Blue Line will allow customers and members to bring their own ammunition to fire in the range after approval. Hand-loaded rounds will most likely not be endorsed but most everything else should be acceptable.

The showroom of the new shooting center will not only have much more room for ammo, guns, apparel, holsters, accessories and other merchandise but also a viewing area for customers to watch what is going on in the range. The classroom will be used for firearm instruction from basic to advanced levels, training for the issuance of Concealed Weapons Permits, and for member social events or meetings.

Memberships to the shooting center will be offered in three levels ? Standard, Gold and the Founders Club? and each will come with perks such as merchandise discounts and free range use. For members, Woodberry hopes to hold monthly events as well as a shooting championship and plans to employ up to 10 people.
