Some barrel work today, using a Kart National match .45 acp barrel

Fitted the hood to the slide and set the lock up, It came in nice a .054 of .060, normal factory lock-up runs between .030 and .040. After correcting the feed ramp the barrel hung over the feed ramp, so it was milled and faced back to allow of the proper 1/32 gap between the barrel and frame feed ramp. Corrected the barrel throat angle and finished to a mirror surface. Reamed the barrel chamber to .906 depth, honed and polished to mirror finish. Chamfered all the barrels sharp edges and 90 degree angles for smooth operation.

On A side note Joe Chambers sent me some of his new barrel Lug cutters so I will be trying them out on this barrel install, they look awesome. (thanks to Joe Chambers, Bob Marvel and Jerry Keefer.)

Are you planning on under cutting the trigger guard?

No Caspian has a high cut frame to start with, the frame sits nice and low in the hand and the trigger guard to front strap line is nice. If it where a colt or springer I would, as the radius under the their trigger guards is no existent.

I will be doing ball cuts, french boarder and 40 lines per inch serrations on the rear slide face.

I did some work on the slide this weekend, changed the ejection port depth and width, french boarder and started some blending and de-horning.

The ejection port has been moved forward to allow the ejection of a live round with an extended ejector. The port has been lowered to my specs, that I like for clean ejection.

Chris Peters, (former Wilson combat master smiff) and now owner of metalloy, is doing the entire pistol in mate hard chrome.

Yeah its not that exciting, but I use them quite a bit for, checkering, french borders, slide serrations, sight serrations, cocking serrations and rear slide face textures. Most use a double angle cutter, but I find better results with the saw.

For all you smiff'ies or highly addicted DIY tuners, I used Joe Chambers barrel lug cutters today and I must say I am very impressed. The measurement from the link pin hole 6 oclock to the 12 in the lower link pin was .105 .105 perfect. Smooth cut, no chatter and knock a few ticks off the total barrel fit time.

All around A+++

working working, I have been swamped with customer guns and some shop re-tooling, but the pistol is coming along nicely. I am at the point of prepping the surfaces for hard chrome, and finishing up some small things.

I will have some pictures ready in a week or two.

Update,

Ok, after some long and painful ransom rest testing, we made a barrel switch on this raffle gun. It now has a hand fitted wilson combat match grade 45 acp barrel.

I have found that when using qaulity match grade ammo, the wilson barrel in 45 acp holds a much tighter group than the kart. when testing 9mm Kart is king. I still choice bar-sto for 38 super, strom lake for 40sw and 10mm, Kart also shines well with the 9x19 high pressure para loads.

so for now, all my 45 acp guns will be built with wilson barrels, 9mm and 9x19 with kart barrels, 9x23, 357 sig and 38 super will use a bar-sto ramped barrels, do to the weak case design of the 38 super, and the over loading of hot hot .223 brass in 9x23 and the high pressure .357 sig round. strom lake has proven very nice results in 40sw and 10mm using a non-ramped barrel, the ramp barrel work well also but I have not seen any case defromation to warrent extra support.

I would like to say that I was very impressed with the sig round, very flat shooting and the velocity wow, very fast round, very fast...

OK!

Started screwing around with the new photo booth and camera, sorry in advance for the wet spots on the gun, its fresh out of the cleaning tank. Just a few small loose ends to clean up and then its off to Chris Peters at Metalloy for hard chrome.

no plunger tube or front sight on yet, cutting front sight blank tomorrow and the plunger tube will be on after finishing.

You can see some of the screen in the pictures, sorry but I just popped my cherry on this whole pro photo stuff.

Nice gun. That barrel bushing and recoil spring plug interface is the stuff of greatness.
